The information contained in this section is specific to athletes who wish to complete the Triathlon Olympic distance.
The same information applies whether you will be doing the race on your own, or as part of a relay team.
Friends & Family Wave Start: Back by popular demand, the Friends & Family wave start allows you to race with a friend or family member that would otherwise be in a different wave start because of their age difference or sex. Your official time will not be affected by this and will appear in Sportstats as if you had raced with your age group. IMPORTANT NOTE: If you are a pretty strong athlete who has the potential to finish in the top 3 of your age category, this is not the right start for you.
The 1.5 km swim takes place in the Olympic rowing basin. The current-free basin is similar to a 2 km long, 100-meter wide and 3-meter deep swimming pool. The water is constantly tested and is rated superior for swimming.
Based on past experiences, the water temperature is expected to be around 21°C (72°F). If wetsuits are not permitted because the water temperature is too high, athletes who still choose to wear their wetsuits can do so, but must compete in the last wave with other athletes who chose to wear them. Their results will still appear on Sportstats.ca but will be presented as a separate group. See last year's results.
- Look for cables under the water normally used for the rowing lanes. Follow a cable and keep yourself in a straight line!
- Upon exiting the water, you must run over the bridge to cross over the runners. Should you have a medical problem that prevents you from climbing the stairs, you may notify the marshall at the swim exit to cross beside the bridge. Runners have the right-of-way and you will have to wait to be escorted across the runners' path.
The 40 km bike portion of the race consists of completing nine (9) laps around the Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve, which is the site of the Formula One Canadian Grand-Prix. The 4.3 km loop has the best road surface in North America.
You are responsible for counting your laps and exiting the Circuit at the correct time. Your lap count will be shown on a giant screen. Your name and bib number will appear on the monitor on lap 5, 7, 8, 9. When you see your name with the number 9, you must exit.

Our “pits area" is located right before the hairpin, on the left-hand side of the track. The aid station will only provide washrooms, bike mechanic, and medical personnel. Please discard used water bottles and unwanted items in the designated hock nets around the pits area.
Relay Teams: Whether you are part of a men’s, women’s or mixed team, you must set your bike on the correct bike rack, clearly identified as Triathlon Olympic - Relay Teams. This is where you will exchange your timing chip with your teammates.
Important Safety Notes
Although there is no time limit to complete the bike course, please remember that this is a race. Officials have the right to remove any athlete from the Circuit, if they are considered to be a safety concern for others.
Since the bike course is counter-clock wise on the Circuit, all cyclists should stay left except to pass. Remember to never cut corners, as faster cyclists may be coming from behind. As you near the completion of your final lap, stay right as you approach the hairpin in order to prepare to exit the Circuit.
No Bike Inspection
There will be no bike inspection. You are responsible for the safety of your equipment. Mechanics from MARTIN SWISS CYCLE will be on hand at registration and during the race to help you with any minor repairs or adjustments.
The 10 km run starts at the back of the Transition Area where you will go directly on the basin wall where you will complete two (2) laps. The run course is flat and fast and supporters will cheer you on as you run pass the grandstands and the Triathletes’ Village. On your second lap, remember to run straight to the finish line!
Aid Stations: There are four (4) aid stations per lap. All stations will have water and Pro-Circuit products.
It is recommended to pick-up your race packet in the Cafeteria of the Athletes' Quarters (big grey building along the basin) on Friday or Saturday before your race. Please visit our Schedule page for more details. If you cannot make it ahead of race day, please make sure you arrive at least two hours before your wave start time.
We are using the Pro-System Timing Chip. Because these chips are so sensitive, you can pick up your timing chip at the Sportstats tent on race day and only as you walk to the swim zone for your wave start. The chip has to be worn on the ankle and returned at the finish line. There will be a $75 fee if you do not return your chip.
Body marking is located near the big white tent. You may choose to "self body mark" to save time. Numbers go on the outside of both arms and the outside of your thighs. On your right calf, write your age as of December 31, 2018.
Participation medals are given to all finishers. All athletes can print a personalized certificate after the race.
Meals are served in the big white tent. Please remember that you swim, bike, run and then you eat - in that order!
The Athletes' Quarters have been fully renovated in 2016 with new washrooms and showers. These facilities are opened to all athletes.
Our medical staff will keep an eye on our athletes throughout the race. The medical staff has the right to stop any participant during the race for his/her own safety. However, please remember that if a medic stops you, or if you receive medical attention on the course, this does not mean that you will be disqualified.
Please note that we will have numerous "first responders" circling the course. The main medical area with our race doctor is located in the Athletes' Quarters close to the finish line.
In order to receive a massage, you MUST take a shower first (available in the Athletes' Quarters – long grey building along the finish line). Massages will be available near the awards tent for all triathletes for a minimal fee.
